Manifolds and cell complexes Definition
n-skeleton
Definition
Let be an integer.
- Let be a CW complex. The -skeleton of is the union of all closed cells of of dimension at most .
- Let be a simplicial complex. The -skeleton of is the subcomplex of all simplices of of dimension at most .
The notation is also common.
Remarks
The torus has a CW structure with one -cell, two -cells and , and one -cell attached along . Its -skeleton is a point, its -skeleton is a wedge of two circles, and its -skeleton is .
The skeleton depends on the cell structure and not only on the space. The sphere with one -cell and one -cell has a point as -skeleton. The sphere as the boundary of a tetrahedron has as -skeleton a graph with vertices and edges. So "the -skeleton of " has no meaning before a cell structure is chosen.
For a CW complex, is obtained from by attaching -cells along maps from their boundary spheres, and is the union of its skeleta with the weak topology. The inclusion induces an isomorphism on homotopy groups for and a surjection for .
