Near-unanimity term
Definition
Let be a variety of algebras and let be an integer. A near-unanimity term of arity for is a term such that satisfies the identities Here the -th term in the chain has in position and in all other positions. An algebra has a near-unanimity term when the variety it generates has one, that is, when the identities hold in .
Remarks
Example: in the variety of lattices, is a near-unanimity term of arity . Check: by absorption, and the other two identities follow in the same way by symmetry of . A near-unanimity term of arity is called a majority term. Non-example: the variety of groups has no near-unanimity term of any arity. The reason is that a variety with a near-unanimity term is congruence-distributive, while the group has a non-distributive lattice of normal subgroups. If is a near-unanimity term of arity , then is one of arity . The abbreviation NU term is common.
