Negative refraction
Summary
Negative refraction is refraction in which the refracted ray lies on the same side of the normal as the incident ray. Its basic case is the interface with a medium of negative refractive index, where both the permittivity and the permeability are negative. In such a medium the phase moves against the flow of energy. Veselago studied such media theoretically in 1967, and they were realised with metamaterials around 2000.
