Example
A Veselago medium is a homogeneous, isotropic, lossless medium whose relative permittivity and relative permeability are both negative at the frequency considered. It is named after Victor Veselago, who studied the theory of such media in the 1960s.
Check that it carries waves and that it refracts negatively. Take a plane wave , with real vectors , , and . Maxwell's equations give and . They have nonzero solutions when , and , so plane waves propagate. Since , the vector points opposite to , so is a left-handed triple. The time-averaged Poynting vector is which points opposite to . So energy flows against the phase velocity. Since energy must flow away from a source, the refractive index is . At an interface with vacuum, Snell's law then puts the refracted ray on the same side of the normal as the incident ray. This is negative refraction.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
