Definition
Let , and consider a second-order ordinary differential equation for on . A Neumann boundary condition is a pair of conditions with given real numbers . More generally, let be a bounded domain, that is, a connected open set, whose boundary is of class . Let be the outward unit normal vector at , and let be a given function. For an equation for on , the Neumann boundary condition is where is the directional derivative of along .
Remarks
On the outward normal derivatives are and , so the two forms agree up to the sign at .
Example: on with and . The function has , and , so it solves this Neumann problem; so does for every constant .
Non-example: together with is not a Neumann condition, since the first condition prescribes a value.
For on with Neumann data , the divergence theorem gives the necessary condition . Solutions, when they exist, are unique only up to an additive constant.
