Statement

Let a,k,L>0a, k, L > 0 and T0>0T_0 > 0. Consider the one-phase Stefan problem with diffusivity aa, conductivity kk, latent heat LL per unit volume and constant boundary temperature g=T0g = T_0. Put Ste=kT0/(aL)\mathrm{Ste} = k T_0 / (a L), the Stefan number.

  1. The equation λ eλ2erf⁡(λ)=Ste/π\lambda \, e^{\lambda^2} \operatorname{erf}(\lambda) = \mathrm{Ste} / \sqrt{\pi} has exactly one root λ>0\lambda > 0.
  2. With this λ\lambda, the functions s(t)=2λat,u(x,t)=T0(1−erf⁡(x/(2at))erf⁡(λ))s(t) = 2 \lambda \sqrt{a t}, \qquad u(x, t) = T_0 \left(1 - \frac{\operatorname{erf}\left(x / (2 \sqrt{a t})\right)}{\operatorname{erf}(\lambda)}\right) solve the problem for t>0t > 0, where erf⁡\operatorname{erf} is the error function.

Remarks

The left side of the equation in part 1 is continuous and strictly increasing on (0,∞)(0, \infty), from 00 to ∞\infty, so the root exists and is unique. For part 2, erf⁡(x/(2at))\operatorname{erf}(x / (2 \sqrt{a t})) solves the heat equation ut=auxxu_t = a u_{xx}, so uu does too. Also u(0,t)=T0u(0, t) = T_0 and u(s(t),t)=0u(s(t), t) = 0, since x=s(t)x = s(t) gives the argument λ\lambda. The Stefan condition Ls′=−kux(s,t)L s' = -k u_x(s, t) becomes Lλa/t=kT0e−λ2/(erf⁡(λ)πat)L \lambda \sqrt{a / t} = k T_0 e^{-\lambda^2} / (\operatorname{erf}(\lambda) \sqrt{\pi a t}), which is the equation in part 1.

The solution is a similarity solution: it depends on xx and tt only through x/tx / \sqrt{t}. For small Ste\mathrm{Ste}, erf⁡(λ)≈2λ/π\operatorname{erf}(\lambda) \approx 2 \lambda / \sqrt{\pi} gives λ2≈Ste/2\lambda^2 \approx \mathrm{Ste} / 2, so s(t)≈2 Ste ats(t) \approx \sqrt{2 \, \mathrm{Ste} \, a t}.

Going deeper

For a student

The Stefan problem is nonlinear because the domain moves, so explicit solutions are rare. The Neumann solution is the main exact one, and numerical methods for phase change are tested against it. Its key step is the similarity variable x/tx / \sqrt{t}, which turns the heat equation into an ordinary differential equation and fixes the form s(t)=2λats(t) = 2 \lambda \sqrt{a t}. A two-phase version, in which the solid is below its melting point, is solved in the same way.
