Neutral differential equation
Builds on Delay differential equation
Definition
Let and , and let be a function. A neutral differential equation with delay has the form Here is an unknown function with values in , and depends on its last argument. An initial value problem prescribes a history on that is continuously differentiable.
Remarks
Example: , with , which depends on .
Non-example: is a delay differential equation of retarded type, not a neutral one, since does not depend on .
A more general form, due to Hale, is , where is the segment of on and for a suitable function of the past. The linear case is the standard test example.
