Statement

Let (X,Σ)(X, \Sigma) be a measurable space and let (μn)n≥1(\mu_n)_{n \ge 1} be a sequence of complex measures on Σ\Sigma. Assume that for every E∈ΣE \in \Sigma the limit μ(E)=lim⁡n→∞μn(E)\mu(E) = \lim_{n \to \infty} \mu_n(E) exists in ℂ\C. Then:

  1. The μn\mu_n are uniformly countably additive: for every sequence E1⊇E2⊇⋯E_1 \supseteq E_2 \supseteq \cdots in Σ\Sigma with ⋂kEk=∅\bigcap_k E_k = \emptyset, one has sup⁡n∣μn(Ek)∣→0\sup_n \abs{\mu_n(E_k)} \to 0 as k→∞k \to \infty.
  2. The set function μ\mu is countably additive, so it is a complex measure on Σ\Sigma.

Remarks

One proof reduces to the Vitali–Hahn–Saks theorem. Put λ=∑n2−n∣μn∣/(1+∣μn∣(X))\lambda = \sum_n 2^{-n} \abs{\mu_n} / (1 + \abs{\mu_n}(X)), a finite measure. Each μn\mu_n is absolutely continuous with respect to λ\lambda, and the Vitali–Hahn–Saks theorem gives the conclusion.

Example: let fnf_n be integrable functions on a measure space with ∫Efn\int_E f_n convergent for every measurable EE. Then the limit E↦lim⁡n∫EfnE \mapsto \lim_n \int_E f_n is again countably additive.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem is often stated together with the Nikodym boundedness theorem, which says that a family of complex measures bounded on each set is uniformly bounded. Both are measure-theoretic forms of the uniform boundedness principle. They are basic tools in the study of weak convergence in spaces of measures and in L1L^1.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
