Nilpotent operator
Builds on Banach spaceContinuous linear map
Definition
Let be a Banach space and let be a bounded linear operator. The operator is nilpotent when there is an integer with where is the -fold composition of with itself. The least such is the index of nilpotency of .
Remarks
Example: on let . Then , so is nilpotent of index , although its range is infinite-dimensional.
Non-example: the Volterra operator on has spectrum , but is not the zero function for any , so is not nilpotent.
If is nilpotent and , then : for the series is a finite sum that inverts .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
