Topological groups, Lie groups Definition
No small subgroups

Definition
Let be a topological group with identity . The group has no small subgroups if some neighbourhood of has this property. The only subgroup of with is .
Remarks
Example: with . If is a subgroup and with , then for every integer , and for , so . Hence . The same argument with the exponential map shows that every Lie group has no small subgroups.
Non-example: the group of p-adic integers. Every neighbourhood of contains a ball for some , and is a subgroup different from .
The property is often abbreviated NSS. By the Gleason–Yamabe theorem, a locally compact group has no small subgroups if and only if it is a Lie group.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
