Abstract harmonic analysis Amenability and invariant means Theorem
Non-amenability of free groups
Builds on Free groupAmenable groupSubgroup
Statement
Let be the free group on two generators .
Remarks
For part 1, let be the set of reduced words that begin with the letter . Then and . An invariant finitely additive probability would give and . The four sets are disjoint, so their total measure is at most , a contradiction. For part 2, every subgroup of an amenable group is amenable: choose a set of representatives of the right cosets , and define for .
Example: contains the free subgroup generated by and , so it is not amenable. The free groups with , and , all contain and are not amenable, while is amenable.

For a student
This is the basic example of non-amenability, and the source of the Banach–Tarski paradox, since the rotation group contains . The decomposition above is a paradoxical decomposition of , and Tarski's theorem shows that such a decomposition is the only obstruction to amenability. The von Neumann conjecture asked whether containing is also necessary for non-amenability; it is not.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
