Non-standard model of arithmetic
Builds on Peano axiomsNatural numbers
Example
Let be first-order Peano arithmetic in the language with , , , and . A non-standard model of arithmetic is a model of that is not isomorphic to the standard model of the natural numbers.
Such a model exists. Add a new constant symbol , and let , where is the term with copies of . Every finite subset of mentions only finitely many , so it has a model: with read as a large enough number. By the compactness theorem, has a model . In the element is greater than the value of every numeral, so it is not of the form . In a model isomorphic to every element is the value of a numeral, so is a non-standard model of . By the downward Löwenheim–Skolem theorem, can be taken countable.
Remarks
Every non-standard model starts with a copy of , the values of the numerals, followed by the non-standard elements. The order type of every countable non-standard model of is , where is the reversed order of and is the order type of . By Tennenbaum's theorem, no countable non-standard model of has computable addition or multiplication.
