Nonexpansive map
Builds on Metric space
Definition
Let and be metric spaces. A map is nonexpansive if
Remarks
Equivalently, is Lipschitz with Lipschitz constant at most . In operator theory, is often a subset of a Banach space with the norm distance, and the condition reads .
Example: let be a real Hilbert space, a nonempty closed convex set, and the nearest point of to . The variational inequality for gives , so is nonexpansive.
Non-example: on gives .
Every contraction mapping is nonexpansive, but not conversely. The Browder–Göhde–Kirk theorem gives fixed points: a nonexpansive map of a nonempty bounded closed convex subset of a uniformly convex Banach space into itself has a fixed point.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
