Nonholonomic system
Builds on Holonomic constraintGeneralized coordinatesVelocityFrobenius theorem
Definition
Consider a mechanical system with generalized coordinates in an open set and time . Let and be smooth functions of , for and , such that the matrix has rank everywhere. Suppose the motion obeys the constraints, linear in the generalized velocities, The system is nonholonomic if this family is not equivalent to a family of holonomic constraints. This means: there are no smooth functions such that, near each point, a motion obeys the constraints exactly when each is constant.
Remarks
Example: a skate on the plane has coordinates , and the blade forbids sideways motion: . The allowed velocities at each point are spanned by and , and their Lie bracket is not in that span. By the Frobenius theorem the constraint is not integrable, so the skate is nonholonomic. Non-example: the constraint on the plane is , equivalent to the holonomic constraint . For scleronomous constraints with , nonholonomic means that the distribution of allowed velocities is not involutive.
