Nonnegative matrix

Builds on Matrix

Definition

Let m,n≥1m, n \ge 1 and let A=(aij)A = (a_{ij}) be a real m×nm \times n matrix. The matrix AA is nonnegative if aij≥0a_{ij} \ge 0 for all ii and jj. The matrix AA is positive if aij>0a_{ij} > 0 for all ii and jj.

Remarks

One writes A≥0A \ge 0 for a nonnegative matrix and A>0A > 0 for a positive matrix. More generally, A≥BA \ge B means that A−B≥0A - B \ge 0 entry by entry. Example: (1221)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 2 \\ 2 & 1 \end{pmatrix} is positive, hence nonnegative. It is not positive semidefinite, because it has the eigenvalue −1-1. Non-example: (1−101)\begin{pmatrix} 1 & -1 \\ 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix} is not nonnegative, because its entry in row 11 and column 22 is −1-1. Products and sums of nonnegative matrices are nonnegative.
