Norm residue symbol

Summary

Let KK be a local field that contains the group μn\mu_n of nn-th roots of unity. The norm residue symbol of degree nn is a pairing (a,b)n(a, b)_n of two nonzero elements of KK with values in μn\mu_n. It is defined with the reciprocity map of local class field theory, and (a,b)n=1(a, b)_n = 1 exactly when aa is a norm from K(bn)K(\sqrt[n]{b}). For n=2n = 2 it is the Hilbert symbol. It is a Steinberg symbol, so it factors through K2(K)K_2(K), and it is the local ingredient of the general reciprocity laws.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
