Definition
Let be a local field, and let be an integer prime to the characteristic of . Assume that contains the group of -th roots of unity, of order . Let be the maximal abelian extension of , and let be the reciprocity map of local class field theory. For , choose in an algebraic closure of with ; then . The norm residue symbol of degree is
Remarks
The value lies in because is again an -th root of , and it does not depend on the choice of , since fixes . The symbol is multiplicative in each variable, satisfies for , and if and only if is a norm from to . Some books use acting on an -th root of instead; the two conventions give inverse values.
Example: for and , the reciprocity map sends to complex conjugation and to the identity of . For and , , the value of the Hilbert symbol.
Non-example: the field does not contain a primitive cube root of unity, since . So the norm residue symbol of degree is not defined on ; the definition needs .

- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
