Normal moveout
Summary
Normal moveout is the increase of the arrival time of a reflection with the distance between source and receiver. For a flat reflector below a layer of constant speed, the reflection time is a hyperbola in the offset. Its curvature depends on the speed. Correcting for normal moveout flattens the reflection across all offsets, which allows traces to be summed in common midpoint stacking. Measuring the moveout is also the main way to estimate seismic velocities from reflection data.
