Common midpoint stacking
Builds on Normal moveoutVariance
Definition
Let be reflection traces for sources and receivers on a line. The midpoint of a trace is , and its offset is . The common midpoint gather at a midpoint is the set of traces , , with midpoint , of offsets . For a stacking velocity , the common midpoint stack at is the average of the gather after normal moveout correction. Common midpoint stacking is the formation of for every midpoint , which gives a stacked section with one trace per midpoint.
Remarks
Example: suppose each trace is after NMO correction, with a common reflection and independent noises of variance . The stack is , whose noise has variance ; for the noise standard deviation halves while the signal is unchanged. Non-example: averaging the gather without the NMO correction sums reflections at different times, so the reflection is smeared and weakened; this fails the correction in the definition. The number of traces in a gather is the fold of the survey. Scanning and measuring the coherence of the corrected gather, for example by semblance, gives the stacking velocity analysis.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
