Normalized Haar measure on a compact group
Builds on Compact groupHaar measureExistence and uniqueness of Haar measure
Definition
Let be a compact group, that is, a compact Hausdorff topological group. The normalized Haar measure of is the unique left Haar measure on with .
Remarks
It exists and is unique. A Haar measure is finite on compact sets, so , where because is a nonempty open set. Then has total mass . Uniqueness follows from the existence and uniqueness of Haar measure: two Haar measures differ by a constant , and equal total mass forces .
The normalized Haar measure is also right-invariant and invariant under , because compact groups are unimodular. One often writes for the integral against it.
Example: for a finite group of order with the discrete topology, . It is left-invariant, since , and .
Non-example: on every Haar measure is with and Lebesgue measure, so it has infinite total mass. No Haar measure of can be normalized; the hypothesis that is compact fails. A locally compact group has a finite Haar measure exactly when it is compact.
