NTU method
Definition
Consider the two-stream heat exchanger model with heat capacity rates and , overall heat transfer coefficient , area , and inlet temperatures . Let , and .
- The largest possible heat rate is .
- The effectiveness of the exchanger is , where is its actual heat rate.
- The number of transfer units is .
The NTU method computes , where is the function obtained by solving the model for the given flow arrangement.
Remarks
The standard effectiveness relations are as follows. For parallel flow, . For counterflow with , , and for , . In the limit , as for a stream that condenses or boils, for every arrangement.
Example: counterflow with and gives . So the exchanger transfers about percent of .
Non-example: if , then and clause 2 does not define an effectiveness.
Always , and increases with .
