Nuclear space
Definition
Let be or , and let be a Hausdorff locally convex space over . For a continuous seminorm on , let be the Banach space obtained by completing the quotient with the norm induced by . If are continuous seminorms, the identity of induces a continuous linear map of norm at most . is nuclear if the following holds. For every continuous seminorm on there is a continuous seminorm such that is a nuclear operator.
Remarks
Example: the Schwartz space , the space of smooth functions on an open set , and the space of holomorphic functions on an open set are nuclear. Non-example: an infinite-dimensional normed space is not nuclear. Take to be the norm; then every continuous seminorm is equivalent to the norm. So is an isomorphism of infinite-dimensional Banach spaces, which is not compact and hence not nuclear. Grothendieck's original definition is equivalent: is nuclear if and only if, for every Banach space , the projective and injective tensor topologies on agree. Every nuclear Fréchet space is a Montel space.
