Nullary operation

Builds on Finitary operation

Definition

Let AA be a set and let A0={()}A^0 = \set{()} be the set whose only element is the empty tuple ()(). A nullary operation on AA is a finitary operation of arity 00, that is, a function c ⁣:A0→Ac \colon A^0 \to A. The element c(())∈Ac(()) \in A is the constant given by cc.

Remarks

The map c↦c(())c \mapsto c(()) is a bijection from the set of nullary operations on AA to AA. So a nullary operation is usually written as an element of AA.

Example: in (ℤ,+,0)(\Z, +, 0) the constant 00 is the nullary operation cc with c(())=0c(()) = 0.

Non-example: on the empty set there is no nullary operation, because a function from the one-element set A0A^0 to ∅\emptyset does not exist. This is why an algebra with a constant has a nonempty universe.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
