statement proposition
Number of edges of a complete graph
Statement
Let be a natural number. Then the complete graph has exactly edges.
Remarks
The edges of are exactly the -element subsets of the vertex set. The number of k-element subsets gives the count. The handshaking lemma gives the same count: . Each simple graph on vertices has at most edges.
Explanations
L1 human
If people all shake hands with each other, there are handshakes. Each person shakes hands, and this counts each handshake twice.
