Combinatorics Theorem

Number of strings of distinct letters

Builds on Falling factorialNumber of injections

Statement

Let XX be a set with mm elements, and let nn be a positive integer with n≤mn \le m. Call a string over XX a permutation if no letter occurs twice in it. Then the number of such strings of length nn is P(m,n)=m(m−1)⋯(m−n+1)P(m,n) = m(m-1)\cdots(m-n+1).

Remarks

Here P(m,n)P(m,n) is the falling factorial (m)n(m)_n, which equals m!/(m−n)!m!/(m-n)!. A string of length nn with distinct letters is the same as an injective function from {1,…,n}\{1,\dots,n\} to XX. So the count is a special case of the number of injections.
