Definition
Consider a motion of a body with velocity field , and let be its Cauchy stress tensor. Let be the material time derivative of , and let be the velocity gradient. Write for the rate of deformation and for the spin, a skew-symmetric tensor. A change of observer is a map , where is a vector. Here is a rotation, that is an orthogonal matrix with determinant . Under a change of observer the stress transforms as . A stress rate is a tensor built from , and the motion. It is objective if, for every change of observer, it transforms in the same way as the stress:
Remarks
Example: the Jaumann rate is objective. Under a change of observer, and . Substituting, the terms with cancel, because is skew-symmetric.
Non-example: the material derivative itself is not objective. The formula above shows that differs from by , which is not zero in general when depends on time. For instance, with a rotation about at constant angular speed and , this extra term is nonzero.
Other standard objective rates are the Truesdell rate and the upper convected (Oldroyd) rate . The Green–Naghdi rate has the form of the Jaumann rate with in place of . Here is the rotation in the polar decomposition of the deformation gradient.
