Observability

Builds on Control system

Definition

Let x′=f(x,u)x' = f(x, u), y=h(x)y = h(x) be a control system on ℝn\R^n with output map h ⁣:ℝn→ℝph \colon \R^n \to \R^p. Let x0,x~0∈ℝnx_0, \tilde{x}_0 \in \R^n. For an admissible control uu, let xx and x~\tilde{x} be the trajectories with x(0)=x0x(0) = x_0 and x~(0)=x~0\tilde{x}(0) = \tilde{x}_0. The states x0x_0 and x~0\tilde{x}_0 are indistinguishable if, for every uu, h(x(t))=h(x~(t))h(x(t)) = h(\tilde{x}(t)) for all t≥0t \ge 0 at which both trajectories are defined. The system is observable if any two indistinguishable initial states are equal.

Remarks

Consider a linear system x′=Ax+Bux' = A x + B u, y=Cxy = C x. The output difference of two initial states does not depend on uu. The system is observable if and only if, for any T>0T > 0, the output yy on [0,T][0, T] determines x(0)x(0). Observability of the linear system is equivalent to rank⁡(CCA⋮CAn−1)=n\rank \begin{pmatrix} C \\ CA \\ \vdots \\ CA^{n-1} \end{pmatrix} = n. Example: x1′=x2x_1' = x_2, x2′=0x_2' = 0, y=x1y = x_1 is observable, since y(t)=x1(0)+t x2(0)y(t) = x_1(0) + t \, x_2(0) gives x1(0)=y(0)x_1(0) = y(0) and x2(0)=y′(0)x_2(0) = y'(0). Non-example: the same system with output y=x2y = x_2 is not observable, since (0,0)(0, 0) and (1,0)(1, 0) give the same output y≡0y \equiv 0.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
