Statement

Let LL be a countable signature, let TT be a satisfiable LL-theory, and let p(x1,…,xn)p(x_1, \dots, x_n) be an nn-type of TT. Call pp isolated if there is an LL-formula φ(x1,…,xn)\varphi(x_1, \dots, x_n) such that T∪{φ}T \cup \set{\varphi} is satisfiable and T⊨∀xˉ (φ(xˉ)→ψ(xˉ))T \models \forall \bar{x} \, (\varphi(\bar{x}) \to \psi(\bar{x})) for every ψ∈p\psi \in p. If pp is not isolated, then TT has a countable model that omits pp.

Remarks

The proof is a Henkin construction. One adds countably many new constants, lists all tuples of constants, and builds a complete theory with witnesses step by step. At the step for a tuple cˉ\bar{c}, one adds the negation of some formula of pp at cˉ\bar{c}. This is possible because no formula consistent with what has been built so far implies all of pp. The canonical model of the final theory is countable and no tuple in it realizes pp. The same argument omits countably many non-isolated types at once.

Example: let TT be the theory of (ℕ,0,1,+,⋅,<)(\N, 0, 1, +, \cdot, <) and p(x)={x≠0,x≠1,x≠1+1,… }p(x) = \set{x \ne 0, x \ne 1, x \ne 1 + 1, \dots}. The type pp is not isolated, and ℕ\N is a countable model of TT that omits it.

If TT is complete, an isolated type is realized in every model of TT, so the hypothesis cannot be dropped. Countability of LL is also needed. Take constants cαc_\alpha for α<ω1\alpha < \omega_1 and dkd_k for k∈ℕk \in \N, let TT say that the cαc_\alpha are pairwise distinct, and let p(x)={x≠dk:k∈ℕ}p(x) = \set{x \ne d_k : k \in \N}. Then pp is not isolated, but every model of TT is uncountable and so has an element different from all dkd_k.

For a student

The omitting types theorem is the main tool for building countable models with prescribed properties. It shows that a complete theory in a countable language has an atomic model, that is, a prime model, when the isolated types are dense. It is used in the proof of the Ryll-Nardzewski theorem and in the study of the number of countable models, the subject of the Vaught conjecture. It is a counterpart of the compactness theorem: compactness produces models that realize types, and this theorem produces models that omit them.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
