Definition

Let GG be a topological group. A one-parameter subgroup of GG is a continuous group homomorphism γ ⁣:ℝ→G\gamma \colon \R \to G from the additive group of real numbers. So γ\gamma is continuous and γ(s+t)=γ(s)γ(t)for all s,t∈ℝ.\gamma(s + t) = \gamma(s)\gamma(t) \quad \text{for all } s, t \in \R.

Remarks

Despite the name, a one-parameter subgroup is the map γ\gamma, not its image.

Example: for a real n×nn \times n matrix AA, the map γ(t)=etA\gamma(t) = e^{tA} into GLn(ℝ)GL_n(\R), given by the matrix exponential, is continuous, and e(s+t)A=esAetAe^{(s + t)A} = e^{sA} e^{tA} because sAsA and tAtA commute.

Non-example: γ(t)=(1t01+t2)\gamma(t) = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & t \\ 0 & 1 + t^2 \end{pmatrix} is a continuous curve in GL2(ℝ)GL_2(\R) with γ(0)=I\gamma(0) = I, but it is not a homomorphism. The (2,2)(2,2) entry of γ(1)γ(1)\gamma(1)\gamma(1) is 44, while that of γ(2)\gamma(2) is 55.

If GG is a Lie group, every one-parameter subgroup is smooth. Then γ↦γ′(0)\gamma \mapsto \gamma'(0) is a bijection from the one-parameter subgroups of GG onto the tangent space TeGT_eG.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
