Definition
Let be a group. is a one-relator group if it has a presentation with a single relator . Here is an element of the free group on the set . That is, is isomorphic to the quotient of by the normal subgroup generated by .
Remarks
The relator may be taken cyclically reduced, since a cyclic permutation of is a conjugate of and generates the same normal subgroup. A one-relator group has an element of finite order other than if and only if is a proper power in with . In that case, if is chosen not to be a proper power itself, then has order exactly in .
Example: is a one-relator group. The map with and is an isomorphism, since the relator says exactly that and commute.
Non-example: is not a one-relator group. If with finite of size defined it, its abelianization would be modulo the subgroup generated by one vector, which is for some integer . The group is abelian, so it equals its abelianization. It is finite, so , and then it would be cyclic, which it is not. A presentation with infinite gives an abelianization with infinitely many free factors , so it fails as well.
