Operad

Builds on Symmetric groupGroup action

Definition

An operad PP in sets consists of the following data. For each integer n≥0n \ge 0 there is a set P(n)P(n), whose elements are called operations of arity nn. There is an element 1∈P(1)1 \in P(1), the identity. For all k≥1k \ge 1 and n1,…,nk≥0n_1, \ldots, n_k \ge 0 there is a composition map γ ⁣:P(k)×P(n1)×⋯×P(nk)→P(n1+⋯+nk).\gamma \colon P(k) \times P(n_1) \times \cdots \times P(n_k) \to P(n_1 + \cdots + n_k). For each nn the symmetric group SnS_n has a right action on P(n)P(n), written f↦f⋅σf \mapsto f \cdot \sigma. These data must satisfy:

  1. Associativity: for f∈P(k)f \in P(k), gi∈P(ni)g_i \in P(n_i) and hj∈P(mj)h_j \in P(m_j) with 1≤j≤N=n1+⋯+nk1 \le j \le N = n_1 + \cdots + n_k, γ(γ(f;g1,…,gk);h1,…,hN)=γ(f;γ(g1;h1,…,hn1),…,γ(gk;hN−nk+1,…,hN)).\gamma\big(\gamma(f; g_1, \ldots, g_k); h_1, \ldots, h_N\big) = \gamma\big(f; \gamma(g_1; h_1, \ldots, h_{n_1}), \ldots, \gamma(g_k; h_{N - n_k + 1}, \ldots, h_N)\big).
  2. Unit: γ(1;f)=f\gamma(1; f) = f and γ(f;1,…,1)=f\gamma(f; 1, \ldots, 1) = f for all f∈P(k)f \in P(k).
  3. Equivariance: the two identities below hold for σ∈Sk\sigma \in S_k and τi∈Sni\tau_i \in S_{n_i}. γ(f⋅σ;g1,…,gk)=γ(f;gσ−1(1),…,gσ−1(k))⋅σn1,…,nk,\gamma(f \cdot \sigma; g_1, \ldots, g_k) = \gamma(f; g_{\sigma^{-1}(1)}, \ldots, g_{\sigma^{-1}(k)}) \cdot \sigma_{n_1, \ldots, n_k}, γ(f;g1⋅τ1,…,gk⋅τk)=γ(f;g1,…,gk)⋅(τ1⊕⋯⊕τk).\gamma(f; g_1 \cdot \tau_1, \ldots, g_k \cdot \tau_k) = \gamma(f; g_1, \ldots, g_k) \cdot (\tau_1 \oplus \cdots \oplus \tau_k). Here σn1,…,nk∈SN\sigma_{n_1, \ldots, n_k} \in S_N cuts {1,…,N}\set{1, \ldots, N} into kk consecutive blocks of sizes n1,…,nkn_1, \ldots, n_k. It moves the ii-th block to the σ(i)\sigma(i)-th place and keeps the order inside each block. The permutation τ1⊕⋯⊕τk∈SN\tau_1 \oplus \cdots \oplus \tau_k \in S_N permutes the ii-th block internally by τi\tau_i.

Remarks

Example: for a set XX, the endomorphism operad has P(n)P(n) the set of maps Xn→XX^n \to X, identity id⁡X\id_X, composition γ(f;g1,…,gk)(x)=f(g1(x(1)),…,gk(x(k)))\gamma(f; g_1, \ldots, g_k)(x) = f(g_1(x^{(1)}), \ldots, g_k(x^{(k)})) where xx is split into consecutive tuples x(i)∈Xnix^{(i)} \in X^{n_i}, and (f⋅σ)(x1,…,xn)=f(xσ−1(1),…,xσ−1(n))(f \cdot \sigma)(x_1, \ldots, x_n) = f(x_{\sigma^{-1}(1)}, \ldots, x_{\sigma^{-1}(n)}). Associativity and the unit axioms hold because composition of maps is associative and id⁡X\id_X is neutral.

Non-example: P(n)=∅P(n) = \emptyset for all nn, with the empty composition maps. It has no element 1∈P(1)1 \in P(1), so it fails the requirement of an identity.

Replacing sets by vector spaces and products by tensor products gives operads in vector spaces, the usual setting for operads of algebras. Dropping the symmetric group actions and clause 3 gives a non-symmetric operad. An equivalent description uses the partial compositions f∘ig=γ(f;1,…,1,g,1,…,1)f \circ_i g = \gamma(f; 1, \ldots, 1, g, 1, \ldots, 1), with gg in position ii.
