Oracle machine
Builds on Turing machine
Definition
An oracle machine is a Turing machine with these extra parts:
- a second tape, the oracle tape, on which the machine can read and write;
- three special states: a query state , a yes state and a no state .
Let be a set, the oracle. The machine with oracle , written , runs like a Turing machine, except at the query state. Suppose enters while the oracle tape holds the binary code of a number . Then its next state is if and if . A partial function is computable relative to if there is an oracle machine with this property. For every , the run of on input halts with output when is defined, and does not halt otherwise.
Remarks
Example: let copy its input to the oracle tape, enter , and then output from and from . For each oracle , the machine halts on every input and computes the characteristic function of .
Non-example: a device that may query two sets and is not an oracle machine, because an oracle machine queries one fixed set. It can be simulated by an oracle machine with the single oracle .
A machine that never enters is an ordinary Turing machine, so every computable function is computable relative to every oracle. Oracle machines can be listed effectively as , and often denotes the partial function computed by .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
