Orbital elements
Builds on Kepler orbitEccentricity
Definition
Fix a reference plane through the central body, a reference direction in it, and a reference time . Let a body move on an elliptic Kepler orbit whose plane is not the reference plane. Its Keplerian orbital elements are the six numbers:
- the semi-major axis of the ellipse;
- the eccentricity ;
- the inclination , the angle between the orbital plane and the reference plane;
- the longitude of the ascending node , the angle in the reference plane from the reference direction to the ascending node;
- the argument of periapsis , the angle in the orbital plane from the ascending node to the periapsis;
- the mean anomaly at time .
The ascending node is the point where the body crosses the reference plane going upwards. The mean anomaly at time is , where is the mean motion, the period and a time of periapsis passage.
Remarks
The map from orbital elements to position and velocity at is a bijection onto the elliptic states, away from the cases and . For the periapsis is not defined, and for or the node is not defined; equinoctial elements avoid these problems. Example: the International Space Station, with the Earth's equator as reference plane, has roughly km, and ; all six elements are defined because and . Non-example: a geostationary orbit has , so its plane is the reference plane, the ascending node does not exist and clause 4 cannot be applied. The true anomaly or the time of periapsis passage can replace the mean anomaly as the sixth element.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
