Order complex
Builds on Partial orderChainSimplicial complex
Definition
Let be a partially ordered set. The order complex of is the abstract simplicial complex with vertex set whose faces are the finite chains of . So the faces are the finite subsets with .
Remarks
is a simplicial complex because every subset of a chain is a chain. A chain with elements is a face of dimension , so the dimension of is the length of the longest chain of , when it is finite. Topological properties of , such as its homotopy type or homology, mean those of the geometric realization of . Example: let with , , , and no other strict relations. Its nonempty chains are the four points and the four pairs , , , . So is a cycle of four edges, and its realization is a circle. Non-example: for this , the family of all subsets of is a simplicial complex on the vertex set . It is not , since it contains , which is not a chain. The order complex of a chain with elements is a full -simplex.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
