Definition
Let be a partially ordered set. A filter of is a subset such that:
- is nonempty;
- if , and , then ;
- if , then there is with and .
The filter is proper if .
Remarks
Clause 2 says that is an upper set. If is a lattice, clause 3 can be replaced by: implies , using the meet. For , the set is a filter, the principal filter of . Example: in the power set of , the cofinite sets form a proper filter. It contains , a superset of a cofinite set is cofinite, and is cofinite when and are, since . Non-example: in the power set of , the set satisfies clauses 1 and 2 but not clause 3. The only common lower bound of and is , which is not in the set. A filter on a set in the sense of set filters is a proper filter of the power set of .
