Definition
Let be open, , and let be meromorphic functions on . Consider the homogeneous linear equation The point is an ordinary point of the equation if every is analytic at (after removing removable singularities). Otherwise is a singular point: some has a pole at .
Remarks
The point of the Riemann sphere is ordinary or singular according as is ordinary or singular for the equation obtained by the substitution . For real equations with real-analytic coefficients the same words are used, with replaced by a real variable . The definition applies to the normalised equation; for one first divides by .
Example: for , the coefficients and are polynomials, so every is an ordinary point.
Non-example: for , the normalised coefficient has a pole at , so is not an ordinary point but a singular point.
At an ordinary point , every solution is analytic, and its Taylor series at converges at least on the largest disc around on which all are analytic.
