Definition
Let be a prime number. Let be the field of -adic numbers, the completion of for the -adic absolute value , where is the -adic valuation. -adic analysis is the study of functions defined on subsets of or of a complete field extension of . The values lie in such a field or in or . It treats limits, series, continuity, differentiability, power series and integration for the topology given by .
Remarks
The absolute value satisfies the strong triangle inequality . Hence a series in converges if and only if .
Example: , so converges in , and its sum is , since .
Non-example: the same series diverges for the usual absolute value on ; its study is part of real analysis, not of -adic analysis.
Two typical facts. The ring of -adic integers is compact and totally disconnected. The exponential series converges in exactly when .
