Paracompact space
Definition
Let be a topological space. An open cover of is a refinement of an open cover if every is contained in some . The space is paracompact if every open cover of has an open refinement that is a locally finite family.
Remarks
Example: is paracompact. Given an open cover , each compact interval is covered by finitely many members of . Intersect these members with ; the resulting sets, over all , form a locally finite open refinement.
Non-example: the long line is not paracompact, although it is Hausdorff and locally homeomorphic to .
Every compact space is paracompact, since a finite subcover is a locally finite refinement. Some authors include the Hausdorff condition in the definition of a paracompact space.
