Paradoxical decomposition
Builds on GroupGroup action
Definition
Let be a group acting on a set by a group action, and let . A paradoxical decomposition of consists of:
- pairwise disjoint subsets of ;
- elements and of ;
such that The set is -paradoxical if it has a paradoxical decomposition. A group is paradoxical if it is -paradoxical for its action on itself by left multiplication.
Remarks
Example: let , the free group on , acting by left multiplication. Let be the set of reduced words that begin with the letter . The four sets are pairwise disjoint. A reduced word not in gives the reduced word , so , and likewise . So is paradoxical, with .
Non-example: a finite nonempty set is never paradoxical, for any action. The pieces satisfy and , so , which forces .
In the definition one can ask the pieces to be pairwise disjoint too, and likewise the ; this gives the same notion.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
