Parallel transport
Definition
Let be a smooth manifold, let be a smooth vector bundle with a connection , and let be a piecewise smooth curve. Let be the covariant derivative along . A section of along is parallel if . For each there is a unique parallel section along with . The parallel transport along is the map
Remarks
Existence and uniqueness hold because, in a local frame, is a linear system of ordinary differential equations, whose solutions exist on the whole interval. is a linear isomorphism, its inverse is the transport along the reversed curve, and the transport along a concatenation is the composition. Example: for the flat connection on , , so parallel sections are constant and is the identity of for every curve . Non-example of path independence: take the unit sphere with its Levi-Civita connection. Transport around the boundary of an octant, a geodesic triangle with three right angles, rotates tangent vectors by , the area of the octant. For the Levi-Civita connection of a Riemannian metric, is an isometry between tangent spaces. The connection is recovered by .
