Path lifting property

Builds on Covering spaceInterval

Statement

Let p ⁣:E→Xp \colon E \to X be a covering map, let I=[0,1]I = [0, 1], let γ ⁣:I→X\gamma \colon I \to X be a continuous path, and let e0∈Ee_0 \in E with p(e0)=γ(0)p(e_0) = \gamma(0). Then there is a unique continuous path γ~ ⁣:I→E\tilde\gamma \colon I \to E with γ~(0)=e0\tilde\gamma(0) = e_0 and p∘γ~=γp \circ \tilde\gamma = \gamma.

Remarks

For existence, cover XX by evenly covered open sets. By the Lebesgue number lemma, there is a subdivision 0=s0<s1<⋯<sk=10 = s_0 < s_1 < \cdots < s_k = 1 of the interval with each γ([sj−1,sj])\gamma([s_{j-1}, s_j]) in one evenly covered set UjU_j. The lift is built step by step: on [sj−1,sj][s_{j-1}, s_j] it is (p∣V)−1∘γ(p|_{V})^{-1} \circ \gamma, where VV is the sheet over UjU_j that contains the point already reached. Uniqueness holds because the set where two lifts agree is open and closed in the connected interval II, and it contains 00. Example: for p(t)=e2πitp(t) = e^{2\pi i t} from ℝ\R to S1S^1 and γ(s)=e2πins\gamma(s) = e^{2\pi i n s}, the lift starting at 00 is γ~(s)=ns\tilde\gamma(s) = ns, which ends at nn. The covering hypothesis is needed: for the local homeomorphism q=p∣(0,2) ⁣:(0,2)→S1q = p|_{(0, 2)} \colon (0, 2) \to S^1, the loop γ(s)=e−2πis\gamma(s) = e^{-2\pi i s} with e0=1e_0 = 1 has no lift. A lift in (0,2)(0, 2) is also a lift in ℝ\R, so by uniqueness it would be s↦1−ss \mapsto 1 - s, whose value at s=1s = 1 is 0∉(0,2)0 \notin (0, 2).

Going deeper

For a student

The path lifting property, together with its extension to homotopies, is the main tool of covering space theory. It shows that p∗ ⁣:π1(E,e0)→π1(X,p(e0))p_* \colon \pi_1(E, e_0) \to \pi_1(X, p(e_0)) is injective, and it computes the fundamental group of the circle through the covering ℝ→S1\R \to S^1. The endpoint γ~(1)\tilde\gamma(1) of the lift of a loop defines an action of π1(X,x0)\pi_1(X, x_0) on the fibre p−1(x0)p^{-1}(x_0), which leads to the classification of covering spaces.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
