Definition
Let be a pointed space and let . The path space of is the set of paths starting at , with the subspace topology of the compact-open topology. The path space fibration is the map
Remarks
The map is a Hurewicz fibration, and its fiber is the loop space . The space is contractible: deforms every path to the constant path at . So the long exact sequence of homotopy groups gives for .
Example: for and , the fiber over is the space of paths from to , and is surjective, since the path ends at .
Non-example: if is not path-connected, is not surjective. For with the discrete topology and , every path from is constant, so is a point and is empty.
The fiber of over is the homotopy fiber over of the inclusion . So replaces this inclusion by a fibration with a contractible total space.
