Peaucellier–Lipkin linkage
Builds on Inversion in a circle
Description
The Peaucellier–Lipkin linkage is a planar linkage that turns motion on a circle into motion on an exact straight line. It is built from these bars, joined by revolute joints, with two fixed pivots and at distance .
- Two bars of length join to two joints and .
- Four bars of length form a rhombus .
- One bar of length joins to .
Check: by symmetry , and lie on the perpendicular bisector of ; with the midpoint of , So is the image of under the inversion in the circle of centre and radius . By bar 3, moves on the circle of centre and radius , which passes through . Inversion maps a circle through the centre of inversion to a straight line, so moves on a straight line, perpendicular to .
Remarks
It was the first planar linkage known to draw an exact straight line. It is named after Charles-Nicolas Peaucellier and Yom Tov Lipman Lipkin, who found it independently. Without bar 3, the joint traces the inverse of any curve traced by , so the linkage is a mechanical inversor.
