Definition

Let pp be a prime. Let KK be a field, complete for a non-archimedean absolute value ∣⋅∣\abs{\cdot}, and let 𝒪K={x:∣x∣≤1}\mathcal{O}_K = \set{x : \abs{x} \le 1}. The field KK is a perfectoid field if:

  1. The value group ∣K×∣\abs{K^\times} is not discrete.
  2. The residue field of 𝒪K\mathcal{O}_K has characteristic pp.
  3. The Frobenius map x↦xpx \mapsto x^p on 𝒪K/p𝒪K\mathcal{O}_K / p\mathcal{O}_K is surjective.

Let KK be a perfectoid field. A perfectoid KK-algebra is a Banach KK-algebra RR such that the subring R∘R^\circ of power-bounded elements is bounded and the Frobenius map R∘/pR∘→R∘/pR∘R^\circ / p R^\circ \to R^\circ / p R^\circ is surjective. A perfectoid affinoid KK-algebra is a pair (R,R+)(R, R^+) with RR a perfectoid KK-algebra and R+⊆R∘R^+ \subseteq R^\circ an open and integrally closed subring. A perfectoid space over KK is an adic space over KK that is covered by open subspaces isomorphic to Spa⁡(R,R+)\operatorname{Spa}(R, R^+) with (R,R+)(R, R^+) perfectoid affinoid.

Remarks

Example: the completion KK of ℚp(p1/p∞)=⋃nℚp(p1/pn)\Q_p(p^{1/p^\infty}) = \bigcup_n \Q_p(p^{1/p^n}) is a perfectoid field. Its value group is pℤ[1/p]p^{\Z[1/p]}, which is not discrete, and every element of 𝒪K/p\mathcal{O}_K / p is a polynomial in the p1/pnp^{1/p^n}, each of which is the pp-th power of p1/pn+1p^{1/p^{n+1}}. The completed algebraic closure ℂp\C_p of the pp-adic numbers is also perfectoid.

Non-example: ℚp\Q_p is not perfectoid. The Frobenius map on ℤp/p=𝔽p\Z_p / p = \F_p is surjective, but the value group pℤp^{\Z} is discrete, so the first condition fails.

The tilt of KK is K♭K^\flat, the fraction field of lim←⁡x↦xp𝒪K/p\varprojlim_{x \mapsto x^p} \mathcal{O}_K / p; it is a perfectoid field of characteristic pp. Scholze's tilting equivalence identifies perfectoid spaces over KK with perfectoid spaces over K♭K^\flat.
