Definition
Let be a field and let be a central simple algebra over . By Wedderburn's theorem for an integer and a division ring that is central simple over , unique up to isomorphism.
- The index of , written , is the degree of .
- The period (or exponent) of , written , is the order of the class in the Brauer group .
Remarks
Basic facts: divides , divides , and and have the same prime divisors. In particular the period is finite, so is a torsion group.
Example: for over , has degree , so the index is . The class is not trivial, and , so the period is .
Example: has , so its index and its period are both .
Over local fields and over global fields, the period equals the index for every central simple algebra. Over general fields the index can be strictly larger than the period.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
