Definition
Let be real numbers and consider a linear differential equation of order on . A function satisfies the periodic boundary conditions on if For an equation of order , the periodic boundary conditions are for .
Remarks
Example: on , the function satisfies and . So it satisfies the periodic boundary conditions, and it solves . Non-example: on , the same function has but , so the second condition fails. The eigenvalue problem with periodic boundary conditions on has the eigenvalues for . The eigenvalue has the eigenfunction , and each with has the two independent eigenfunctions and . Unlike separated conditions, periodic conditions couple the two endpoints, so eigenvalues of multiplicity can occur. If the coefficients of the equation are -periodic, a solution with these conditions extends to a -periodic solution on .
