Definition
Let be an open subset of and let be continuous. A solution of is periodic if there is a real number with Such a is a period of . If is -periodic in , that is, for all and , a -periodic solution is a periodic solution with period .
Remarks
A periodic solution is a periodic function of that solves the equation. For an autonomous equation , each constant solution is periodic with every period, and the trajectory of a nonconstant periodic solution is a periodic orbit. Example: for , the function has . It is a -periodic solution of an equation with -periodic right-hand side. Non-example: the other solutions with are not periodic, because is not. A maximal solution of a -periodic equation with for one is -periodic when solutions are unique.
