Permutation pattern
Builds on PermutationSubsequence
Definition
Let be positive integers. Write a permutation of in one-line notation , and let be a permutation of . The permutation contains as a pattern if there are indices such that, for all , Otherwise avoids . The set of permutations of that avoid is written .
Remarks
Example: contains . Take the indices , with values ; the first is the largest and the second is the smallest, as in .
Non-example: avoids . Its increasing subsequences are , and and single entries, and none has length .
For every of length , the number is the Catalan number . Knuth showed that the permutations that can be sorted by a single stack are exactly those that avoid . The Stanley–Wilf conjecture gives an exponential bound on for every .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
