Definition

Let 𝐀\mathbf{A} be an algebra with universe AA, and let θ\theta and ψ\psi be congruences on 𝐀\mathbf{A}. Their relational product is θ∘ψ={(a,c)∈A×A:(a,b)∈θ and (b,c)∈ψ for some b∈A}.\theta \circ \psi = \set{(a, c) \in A \times A : (a, b) \in \theta \text{ and } (b, c) \in \psi \text{ for some } b \in A}. The congruences θ\theta and ψ\psi permute when θ∘ψ=ψ∘θ\theta \circ \psi = \psi \circ \theta. The algebra 𝐀\mathbf{A} is congruence-permutable when every two congruences on 𝐀\mathbf{A} permute.

Remarks

The congruences θ\theta and ψ\psi permute if and only if θ∘ψ\theta \circ \psi is a congruence. In that case θ∘ψ=θ∨ψ\theta \circ \psi = \theta \vee \psi, the join in the congruence lattice. A congruence-permutable algebra has a modular congruence lattice.

Example: let GG be a group and NN, MM normal subgroups, with congruences aθb  ⟺  a−1b∈Na \mathrel{\theta} b \iff a^{-1} b \in N and aψb  ⟺  a−1b∈Ma \mathrel{\psi} b \iff a^{-1} b \in M. Then (a,c)∈θ∘ψ(a, c) \in \theta \circ \psi if and only if a−1c∈NMa^{-1} c \in NM, and (a,c)∈ψ∘θ(a, c) \in \psi \circ \theta if and only if a−1c∈MNa^{-1} c \in MN. Since NM=MNNM = MN for normal subgroups, θ\theta and ψ\psi permute.

Non-example: on the set {1,2,3}\set{1, 2, 3} with no operations, let θ\theta have classes {1,2},{3}\set{1, 2}, \set{3} and ψ\psi have classes {1},{2,3}\set{1}, \set{2, 3}. Then (1,3)∈θ∘ψ(1, 3) \in \theta \circ \psi through b=2b = 2. But (1,3)∉ψ∘θ(1, 3) \notin \psi \circ \theta, since the only bb with (1,b)∈ψ(1, b) \in \psi is 11, and (1,3)∉θ(1, 3) \notin \theta.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
