Builds on Seidel aberrationsRefractive indexThin lens equation
Definition
Consider a rotationally symmetric optical system in air made of thin lenses, where the -th lens has focal length and refractive index . The Petzval sum of the system is Assume the system has no astigmatism, and work to the order of the Seidel aberrations. Then the image of a plane object perpendicular to the axis lies on a surface of revolution, the Petzval surface. Its curvature at the axis has absolute value . When , the surface is concave toward the lens. Petzval field curvature is this curvature of the image field, and the system is free of it when .
Remarks
A single thin lens with and mm has per mm, so its Petzval surface has radius mm. Two thin lenses with satisfy the Petzval condition . If , their total power is nonzero, so the pair can form a real image on a flat field. With equal indices , the condition forces , and two thin lenses in contact then have no power at all. In the Seidel expansion, field curvature is the term ; astigmatism splits the image into two surfaces, and the Petzval surface is the one obtained when astigmatism is removed.
